Teenager depression can be a major obstacle to teenagers actualizing their dreams and goals in life. This can have several negative effects on the life of teenagers and their families. The causes of teenager depression may be grouped mainly into two categorizes; they are psychological and environmental causes. The psychological factors/causes deals with the less physical but mental causes of teen depression. While the environmental factors/causes deal mainly with the more physical and obvious causes.
Sometimes teenagers may struggle with certain actions which may lead to them being depressed. These causes maybe, academic pressure from parents, bullying, verbal abuse, and chronic illness. Parents' most times place high academic expectations on their kids, not considering the child’s academic ability. When kids are not appreciated for the effort they put into their school work, but rather are scolded, they may end up seeing their selves as not good enough. This can lead to them being depressed and may consider dropping out of school.
Bullying can also be considered as a major problem in the teenager bracket. This can occur in any social environment not just schools as mostly portrayed. Bullying most times in the life of teenagers do not only involve physical contacts but also verbal abuses. Teens who are bullied in school stand the chance of developing didaskaleinophobia (fear of school). School bullying most times are not confined within the limits of the school walls, but are carried over to the streets and other social environment.
The internet (social network) has also developed into a boxing ring for teen bully victims. The bullier does not limit his activities to physical meetings, but most times goes ahead to ridicule victims on their social network walls, groups they belong to, and in online group conservations. "Notably, cyber victims reported higher depression than cyber bullies or bully-victims, which was not found in any other form of bullying," the study authors wrote in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
